Just so we are clear, I love words.  The word overwhelmed has come up so much in the last few days that I found myself wondering if it is possible to be simply whelmed, without being overwhelmed.  Which brought up the question, Is whelmed even a word?  I’ve never heard anyone say, “I’m feeling whelmed.”  So I looked it up in the online dictionary, and it turns out whelmed is a word.  It means submerged or covered with water. Ah, well that makes sense.

As a Mom who works I often feel whelmed and lets face it once you are whelmed it’s a very short putt to overwhelmed.  A client needs something 48 hours sooner than they thought they needed it.  I start to feel whelmed, and before I can even acknowledge that I’m whelmed, my 4 year old decides that he is absolutely starving despite the fact that dinner is only an hour away. The phone rings as he pulls an entire bag of pears out of the refrigerator dumping them all over the floor and ladies and gentleman we have overwhelmed!

I have to admit that I am ashamed at how often and how easily I feel overwhelmed as a Mom.  Overwhelmed wasn’t even part of my vocabulary before I was a Mom, it was something I associated with being incompetent.  I always thought “What is the use of being overwhelmed?  It only slows you from doing the thing you need to do – focus and forge ahead!”  Ahh, silly naive thoughts, before motherhood.

I’ve decided I need a new association for the word overwhelmed, more fitting to its actual meaning.  From now on when I am overwhelmed I’m going to picture myself underwater.  Nice cool, quiet, blissful water, where it’s serene, no phones ring, no emails appear, I am light and buoyant and my breasts defy gravity.  It turns out overwhelmed isn’t so bad after all!

Over the last three months I have been juggling child care while I work.  Because my husband travels a lot, I am often stuck with the kids 24-7 trying to get it all done.  I don’t have anyone who comes on a regular basis and rely on a team of women who help me when I need it.  This weekend the gals I usually depend on all were busy. Because of the flexing in my work and husband’s travel schedule it is impossible to hire someone full time.  So I struggle with the part-time two step.

My kids love it because the different women all bring different things to the baby sitting party.  Jasmin loves to sing and dance.  Brinna loves to pretend play and makes towns out of our Thomas Tracks.   Gloria is the outdoor maniac and there is hiking, swimming and hours at the park.  Mita loves to cook and we all enjoy her creations from cakes to casseroles – and she often makes enough for a few days!

This weekend, the holiday weekend,  I was alone. No husband, no help and I had a huge project to complete.  I needed about 10 uniterrupted hours.  I phoned a mom friend and was complaining when she told me about some fantastic websites that kept her toddler busy while her baby napped.  Sounded to good to be true, but you know what? It wasn’t.

Each day I put my son down for a two-hour nap and brought my other son into my office. I set him up on the computer and he got the hang of it a lot quicker than I ever did.  We went to the site my friend recommended and were amazed at all the free online games that were educational and entertaining — best of all they are FREE!  I am not an advocate of plunking your kid in front of the tv or computer for hours, but in an emergency these do the trick!  And, my son and I decided that for 30 minutes each day he gets to use mommy’s computer and do his “work.”

He has learned all about recycling and warns us all not to waste water.  He shows his little brother Elmo’s Potty game and tells everyone he meets “it’s not good to hold it – when you feel like you have to go, go!”  Its fun and he’s learned a lot of really valuable and charming things — a lot better than his recent playdate learning of how to blow your spit and suck it back in — which usually means spitting on his brother.

So here are the sites – I suggest you check them out — I am glad I did…

A couple months ago I wrote a profile on an 80-year-old pianist/singer who currently headlines a piano bar at a historic hotel in my area. She is incredibly talented, beautiful and worldly beyond my comprehension. She has traveled the world singing for troops in Greenland, the mafia in Boston and tourists in Mexico, just to name a few.

Well, we hit it off that night and in correspondence, she sent me a copy of a book she had written about one little chunk of her experiences and it was fascinating – I couldn’t stop reading it until I was done. So the other night she invited me over for dinner and we spent almost five hours talking about her life and some of her adventures.

For most of her life she was a single working mother struggling as a lounge act to keep food on her table during a time when women were not normally allowed the freedom we so regularly take advantage of today.

She tells of going through dumpsters on Thursdays because that’s when the markets would discard their produce, whether it was bad or not. There were the furnishings in her apartment – rejects from nicer neighborhoods that had been placed on the street as garbage.

And then the jobs. She took the jobs she could get, which often meant travel or unsavory characters who expected more than her talent on the ivories – sexual harassment was the rule, not the exception. She says that there were many times she knew a job would last only as long as she could fake a recent hysterectomy or buy herself a week by saying “Aunt Flo was in town.”

It made me realize how good we have it these days thanks to women like her who fought everyday to be respected and taken seriously, and with far fewer options than are available to us now. Take some time to listen to their stories and be sure to thank them for the trails they blazed.

¿Qué servicios o productos vas a ofrecer?

If youre like me, you are trying to make the transition from a working mom to a work at home mom running my own business and let me tell you, its tough. Between work and home, I dont have much time to organize myself to make the transition quickly.  So I am taking baby steps towards my goal.

Lets take the first baby step by answering these questions. What are you going to do? What services or products do you want to offer? What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing that can also provide you with income? What can you offer your clients from the comfort of your home? Will your boss consider you working for him/her from home?  Start by thinking about these questions and write it down in a notebook.  Write everything in your notebook that has to do with your new business idea.  Remember to carry your notebook everywhere so that you can write down any ideas that might pop in your head during the day.

TAKE THAT OLD CELL PHONE, DIGITAL CAMERA, PDA AND LAPTOP OUT OF RETIREMENT AND PUT IT TO WORK!Please donate your used cell phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops to help raise much needed funds for SCValleyMommies.com. SCValleyMommies.com is collecting used cell phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops on June 8th. We will receive a monetary donation for each piece that we collect during this Fund-Raising Program.

According to a new study by environmental research group Inform, people in the US will soon be getting rid of about 130 million cell phones each year. “That’s about 65,000 tons of cell phones and ultimately they are thrown away,” says Joanna Underwood, spokesperson for Inform. Cell phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops contain toxic materials such as arsenic, lead and zinc.

Electronics donated through the Phone Fund Program, however, are given new life. Your throw-away phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops are desirable to people living in developing nations. Phone Fund makes your unused technology available to those who can use it, while keeping it out of the landfill. Those items that cannot be resold are recycled for their component parts according to EPA standards.

“We’re very excited about this program”. “This recycling program not only benefits SCValleyMommies.com but assists in preserving the environment and bringing communications to people who could not otherwise afford it.”

All cell phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops are accepted. Please donate at the following location and date:

    June 8th
    11-3
Central Park in Santa Clarita (by the play area)
Come join us for our Family day and don’t forget to bring your electronics!!

If you are unable to attend this event, please send me an e-mail (Melissa@SCValleyMommies.com).  We will figure out a way to collect your electronics.

I was talking to my husband about the running of my company www.motherhoodincorporated.com and how I was feeling run down, overworked and getting really stressed out as my company continues to grow in leaps and bounds.  Some days it feels like I am wrangling 6 horses that want to charge out of control while I hold on to the reigns for dear life.  In the beginning, I fretted about too little work …now I fret about too much. My son who is four looked up at me and said, “Mommy, you just need to be Wonder Woman.”

    He was right.

But I am no Wonder Woman. No snazzy cuffs. No invisible jet. No magic lasso.

I went online to find some tips on time management.  I often complain about not having the time to get things done and boy was I surprised to find so much of the on-line advice blaming me for wasting time and constantly! What I found was that many experts said on average that interruptions happen approximately 8 times a day and adds up to about 2-3 hours of wasted time.  I was also instructed that I can control these interruptions with just a little persistence and planning.

My first thought was, “You are out of your cotton-picking mind!”

My second thought was, “You are not a working mother!”

In my effort to “plan, plan, plan” and “if you fail to plan, plan to fail,” I realized a few things as I plan for Motherhood Incorporated’s day..

    1. No matter how much you plan or organize, a bloody nose, a dirty diaper or a high fever throws you off your plan.

    1. You are only as good as your support systems allow you to be – babysitters flaking, kids home sick from daycare,  or husbands out of town throw you off your plan.

    1. Planning gets the dinner done faster, but won’t do the grocery shopping, the cooking or the cleanup while battling with your children over the “Yuk!” dinner you prepared.

    1. Established working hours only work if your kids, dogs, husbands and the planet Mercury are in alignment. Check your astronomy guide for that part of your “plan.”

    1. Planning to get everything done on your to-do list is like taking off all the baby weight you gained in your third pregnancy, plus the first and second, by this weekend.

It sounds like I am actively against planning, but I am really not.  I am actively against UNREALISTIC planning. I have found that my own system  at www.motherhoodincorporated.com works best.  I write down everything I have to do each day prior to starting my work day.  I put everything in one of three categories:

    1. Things that MUST get done today.
    2. Things I COULD get done today.
    3. Things that CAN WAIT.

I made a promise to myself that I will be proud of myself if I just accomplish the things that MUST get done.   If I have time, I get to the could ones…but that is pretty rare.  As for the things that are in the can wait category – well they wait and that is okay.

My advice for everyone reading this article – do the best you can, set realistic expectations taking into consideration your responsibilities, and hide two matching bracelets in your desk for the times you need to repel evil clients!

Two weeks ago my 25 year old cousin died suddenly. It has been a horrible, incredibly sad time for my family and I.

I went home to be with my family and plan and attend his funeral. I watched as my aunt, uncle and their two remaining kids struggled to come to terms with his sudden passing. As we all rallied around them, we were constantly trying to make sense of this horrible situation.

What struck me and continues to strike me was watching my aunt lose her son. As a new mom, I feel a strong connection and understanding of motherhood now. A feeling you just can’t understand until you become a mom. I talked with my aunt about her boy, her “baby”. She shared so many memories with all of us. I made it my job to put together the posters for his funeral that were full of pictures of his life. There were so many amazing pictures. The ones with his parents really hit me hard. The ones with his mom filled me with intense sadness and dread.

The world of vulnerability we enter into as parents is powerful and strong. If we were to spend our day thinking about all the disastrous situations our children could get into every second of the day we’d wrap then in bubble wrap and never let them out of our site. But we can’t live that way. However, watching my aunt suffer so much makes me want to do just that.

As a mom, I can feel my aunt’s anguish. It’s palpable. All I can do is send her all my love, speak with her about Ryan and be there for her when she needs me.

When I look at my little boy, I feel so blessed. I hold him tight and take in each moment I have with him.

Chances are you posted a picture of yourself that reflects you as the friendly confident person that you are and right alongside your picture is your company’s name and logo. That’s all fine, since certainly you want your site’s viewers to feel confident in your abilities, however in today’s society a lot more is going to be needed to convert your viewers to clients.

    A) Analyze Your Site

One of the first steps to building an effective site is a careful analysis of your existing web site or the implementation of a new one if you don’t have one already.

On one hand having a site in place allows you the ability to figuratively take it apart and examine each aspect of it to determine its overall performance on the Internet. This is a good thing because you already have much of the systems in place and just need to clean them up, add fresh content and remove the stale ones.

On the other hand, building a site from scratch allows you to do it properly the first time around. This way you can build it using all of the SEO techniques, and lead generating understanding to build a site that works for you right away.

When viewing your existing site, take the following into consideration:

    • Is it informative? If not, what’s missing?
    • Is it easy to navigate the site or would prospects have a difficult time trying to find what they need?
    • Is it a cookie cutter website, meaning does it look like everyone else’s?
    • If yes, what can you do to personalize it?
    • If you were a person who was looking to find a home in your area, can you find all the information that you need on your site?
    • How well does the content reflect your company and how much is it contributing to the efforts in realizing your goals?
    • Does your site contain informative information such as articles discussing the various aspects of real estate?
    • Does your site contain blogs that are meant to both entertain and inform your viewers?
    • Does your site reflect your area of expertise?
    • How many leads have you obtained from your site and what is the conversion percentage?
    • Do the linked pages load slowly, which is a quick way to annoy and lose your target audience?
    • What keywords and phrases are you using on your site and how much of your content is relevant to those words and phrases?
    • Factoring in these questions will help you to determine how to revamp your existing site or how to plan your new one.

Ever feel like you’re in a race against the competition for clients? Let me tell you this: constantly hounding them for their business is not the way to go.

But there are three sure-fire things you can do to set up shop so that clients are coming to YOU instead of you running after them all the time.

    1. ASK FOR IT. It may seem like the simplest, silliest thing to mention here, but I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for your marketing materials (including website and blog) to include a “call to action.” It’s OK to assume that your visitors and prospective clients want to know how to get in touch with you. So, help them out by telling them how to do it! You’ll notice that on every main page of my website, I include a call to action near the bottom. On every single page.
    2. DO A GOOD JOB. Another very simple (well, maybe not always) thing to do. This is not rocket science. If you do a good job, your clients will come back to you. You don’t even need a fancy shopping cart with autoresponders and all that jazz. Just be your amazingly fabulous self, do a great job, and you’ve locked in a client for life. Yes, it’s great to keep up with your clients to remind them that you’re still around, but you don’t need to chase them down with sales and discounts. In fact, your repeat clients will pay for you at a premium because they understand from experience how valuable you are.
    3. CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO. Even I am guilty of not clearly explaining what I do, which is why I’m in the process of creating clear-cut proposals for each of my services and they will be available for prospective clients to download when they visit my services page. If your services are outlined clearly enough, clients will know what you do and won’t click away out of frustration, boredom or disinterest. If they need something you provide, they will contact you.

A fourth, bonus sure-fire way to get clients coming to you is to make sure you are easy to contact. Don’t be elusive. If you’re a virtual assistant, at least include an email address. But, including an actual contact form is best.

If you don’t have a contact form, download the freecontactform.com’s .zip file and get to work. You’ll need a webhost that supports .php (and not all plans do – don’t assume this – that’s why I like siteground).

Try these out! They work for me.

    Cheers,

    Tia

Hold on to your hats, I’m going to say something controversial.  No, you do not have to write your own blog.  Okay, everyone take a deep breath.

For generations busy influential people have surrounded themselves with wordsmiths, people who are good with words, to help them to make the absolute utmost of their communication skills.  We no longer hide the fact that a team of speech writers works with all presidents and presidential candidates.  Jay Leno and David Letterman don’t step foot on the stage without a room full or writers punching up their jokes.  We accept that these fabulously successful people have help writing material that ends up being credited to them, so why are we squeamish about people getting help writing their blogs?

Yes it is supposed to be personal.  I’m sure that David Letterman would argue that his monologue is pretty personal.  We accept that successful and busy people need a writing staff because their talents are needed elsewhere.  Isn’t the same true for you? Wouldn’t it be great for you to have a well written blog, complete with your input, that is published on a consistent basis but doesn’t require all of your time and attention?

Don’t you wonder if that’s how the really successful people are doing it?  I can tell you with certainty; in most cases they have “blog support”.  Different clients need different things.  Some people write a blog themselves and just use our services to grammar check and beef up the blog for search engine optimization.  Other clients give us a list of topics, we write blogs on the topics and then they add their own flavor to it – thus making it very personal but severely cutting the amount of time they have to spend on a blog.  Other clients ask us to blog on a general subject and only approve the blogs before they are posted.  It depends on the client’s desires for the blog and for their time.

The more successful you are the more crucial your time management skills.  Blogging is with out a doubt one of the most incredible tools available in today’s fast paced technology driven world.  Not having the time to blog is no longer an option.  When you are ready to delegate we have wordsmiths on call at www.motherhoodincorporated.com

thermometerRight now I have a horrible, lingering, downright debilitating cold and sinus infection.  Yes, of course I’ve been hacking and sniffling all week, but optimist and procrastinator that I am, I’ve pooh-poohed any notion of any kind of doctor’s visit.  Why? I hate shelling out a $35.00 co-pay simply to be told, “Drink lots of fluid and rest.”  That’s money that could be used toward something useful, like our once a week restaurant dinner, thank you very much.  Besides, I rarely get sick.

But now I’m thinking that I should have forfeited the prospect of takeout and visited old Dr. McGruff after all.  Because now it’s Friday, his office closes at noon, and I’m simultaneously facing two deadlines and a cranky toddler who’s (rightfully) tired of dealing with a cranky mother.  And my head feels as if it’s going to explode, even though, truth be told, I’ve already ingested enough cough and cold liquid this week to stock CVS.

Back when I was a corporate minion, it was simple; I (or my partner) trudged Alina to daycare, and I stayed blessedly in bed to catch up on a mother’s most elusive, priced commodity: sleep.  Of course, that’s only if I were sick enough to stay home in the first place; many are the days that I headed to the office armed with a medical kit to suffer gloomily behind a desk, picking and choosing my e-mail battles.  But even that was easier than this … how do you work and feed your child(ren), and entertain your child(ren), and tend to your house? Or do you? How do you cope with being a super employee when you’re a sick mom who just wants (needs) to sleep but also needs to care for her rambunctious kid?

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve raised my voice at my beautiful daughter more than once (more than twice) today.  I’m stressed and sick and apparently unable to discipline effectively enough to be able to send even one e-mail.  And of course she’s eschewed her nap.

Work at home moms, how do you all deal when you– not the kid(s)– are sick? I’m counting the minutes until my partner comes home.  Too bad McGruff won’t be in until Monday.

thermometerEstoy enferma.

There are lots of ways that you can work with a Virtual Assistant.  My favorite way is through Motherhood Incorporated, okay I’ll admit that I’m biased.  I work for them.  But I also happen to think that they “get it right” – which is why I not only work for them, I’m a client too.

The most important thing when hiring any virtual assistant is to clearly define what you want the virtual to accomplish.  This might sound ridiculous, but hear me out.  Recently I hired a virtual assistant (from Motherhood Incorporated) to research Birthday Parties for my son who is about to turn 5 in a few weeks.  I started to do the research myself and quite frankly it was making me so crabby and taking up so much of my time that I realized I needed to outsource it.  I had to figure out exactly what I wanted to know.  I wanted a party for 30 children and 25 adults in a venue where the kids could get as loud as they wanted but where there was no huge ambient noise (I can’t handle the loud music at those bouncy house parties) I had a specific amount of money that I was willing to spend on the location and another amount on food.  I wanted a comparison of prices on if I did an all-in-one package or paid for everything separately.  And I wanted the work done in less than 24 hours.

I won’t tell you what I paid for the research but I will tell you that to do the work myself would have taken me at least 2 hours and what I was able to bill in that 2 hours was easily 4 times what I spent on the research.  The job was done on time and I was able to pick the perfect birthday venue for my son – AND I saved money on the location.

The job was a huge success because I had the right person for the job. We have a mom who knows everything there is about having a party – I ‘m convinced she could throw a party on the moon with 2 hours notice. I gave her explicit instructions about what my expectations were.  I knew what information I wanted and when I wanted it.  I told her what to exclude (places that play loud music) so she didn’t waste time finding information I wasn’t interested in.

Researching a Birthday party may sound like a silly thing to use a virtual assistant for, but it saved me time and money so I could attend to my business.  What ever reason you hire a virtual assistant make sure that you are clear about what you want accomplished and when you expect it done.  You will always be happier in the long run.

The perfect virtual assistant is some one who is responsible, skilled, and experienced.  Responsibility is crucial.  You need someone who can complete tasks on time with out having someone stand over their shoulder.

Being skilled is also imperative.  One of the benefits of having a virtual assistant is that it frees you to spend time on the tasks you choose to.  If you are constantly having to provide input and “train” an assistant then your time is not well spent. The skill set of the virtual needs to match the needs of the specific job.  And since the jobs you need completed will vary from time to time, we recommend working with a service such as ours, Motherhood Incorporated.  In this way you will have a corps of talented virtual assistants on call.

The importance of experience cannot be overstated.  You wouldn’t hand the keys to your Jaguar to a high school body shop class and ask them to repair your fender, and you certainly don’t want to hand over crucial business tasks to just anyone.  You want to stick with professionals who will get the job done quickly, efficiently and right – the first time.

Hiring a virtual assistant is a decision to be more productive.  Taking the time to hire a proper virtual assistant service will pay off in productivity, efficiency and costs.

Yoga Tashirat KidsHello.  My name is Karly Mezera and I am a 21 year-old working mother with 6 adopted children and a wonderful husband named Chris.  I work at an orphanage my mother started 7 years ago in the mountains of Central Mexico in a s mall town called Tepoztlan.  We are about one hour south of Mexico City.

The orphanage we run is a private orphanage.  We are awarded children from the State run orphanage that are considered “unadoptable.”  These are children with many family members in the State orphanage system, teenage children or children with severe physical, emotional and mental handicaps.  Currently we have 20 children here.

Most recently we started a project to build our own school on the grounds of the orphanage.  The public educational system in Mexico is very poor and the private educational system is extremely expensive.  At first we wanted to build a school that our children could attend that would give them a proper global education.  Then we quickly thought to make the school available to the children of Santo Domingo, an extremely poor town that is 3 miles up the road from where we live.

In Santo Domingo the school and living conditions are very bad, probably on par with some of the worst conditions in all of Mexico.  The town is very poor, so little to no taxes are collected on properties.  With little financial support from the government the public school in Santo Domingo has to charge the poor parents of the children that attend for every little thing they do.

School books, gym class and class materials are all paid for by the parents of the children that attend.  Some parents have as many as 6 children in school at any one time and the weekly payments to the school can be financially devastating.  Most families live on a average of $50 a week for all of their expenses combined.  With the ability to serve this community how could we not open our doors to them as well.

We had witnessed over the past few years the miraculous transformations some of our own children have experienced while being home schooled at the orphanage.  All of the children came to us way behind in their academics.  Twelve year olds were reading at a 6-7 year old level.  Many of our children could not attend private school because of how academically behind they were.  After seeing the transformations in our own children we knew the same could happen for the Santo Domingo children as well.  In March of 2008 we decided to build a school for all of the children of Santo Domingo and are children as well.

What will follow will be a collection of stories about this process.  The difficulties in dealing with the local, State and Federal government with regards to the school and the every day life of my family.

I would like to invite you to visit some of our websites regarding the school project and our orphanage.  In order to open the school we need a monthly operating budget of $10,000USD.  We decided to run a campaign called 500 Together, where we would get 500 people to donate $20 a month to make the school happen.  So far we have 200 people and enough money for the elementary school.  We still need more to be able to allow the Middle and High School children.

The website for our school campaign is: www.500together.com

    The school’s website is:  www.ixayaschool.com

    Our orphanage website is:  www.tashiratkids.org

I look forward to sharing all of these stories with you and I’m sure you’ll be able to feel the emotions that I experience each and every day.  As a mother I not only want to help myself and my own children, but all mothers, families and children that need a helping hand in life.

A writer from Yoga Plus Magazine was nice enough to do a story on our orphanage.  The magazine should still be available throughout the world at large bookstores if you want to see it.

I look forward to sharing with you again soon.

    With Love,

Karly Mezera is truly one of the most unique and outstanding working mothers that we have had the honor to feature. She will be writing blogs for us from the mountains of Central Mexico where she works with a private orphanage that raises children considered “unadoptable.”  Karly and her husband Chris have 6 adopted children of their own.

What is even more amazing about Karly is that she is just 21!

Motherhood Incorporated is looking forward to hearing Karly’s stories about her life and her work – and raising 6 kids in the meantime.  Welcome Karly!

Can’t wait to see what she is doing? Check out their site www.tashiratkids.org.

Right off the bat I want to thank you for taking the time to read through my blog. I am up early this morning and a thought that is very close to my heart jumped right  into my head. I felt the need to share it with you.

I’ve got one of THE hardest ‘Jobs,’ in the world, being a (single) mother to an amazinig 8-year boy named Nickolas.

Another of Nick standing beside tulips   Photo of Tulips that Nick took

(Here are a few photos of my boy at a local tuplip festival. The middle picture he took!)

Now, I must tell you that purposely emphasized the word J-O-B because although with all that I am doing with raising my son it doesn’t pay my bills or put food directly on our table. This job is more important, more meaningful and more rewarding than any job I could ever do as a business woman. I feel that it is the most difficult thing (but also the most rewarding) I will ever do in  the span of my whole entire life!

I can’t help but think about these type of things from time to time and I am sure that any Mom or Dad gets caught up in the same thoughts.

I want to CONGRATULATE each one of you who is in my same shoes and just in case no one has told you lately your kid told me to tell you that they love you and think that you are doing great at your J-O-B and they appreciate the work you do at your other job as well!

Have a wonderful, productive and fulfilling day today!

The best way to make your website user focused is to find out what your potential clients really want to know. You might think that as a professional, you already know this information but don’t be so sure about that.

Times change and so do the questions that people have. Also, everyone is different so they have different real estate needs.

It might seem natural to assume that most families want the white house with the picket fence and a big back yard. This may not as true as it used to be.

There are a lot of single parents out there, many holding more than one job and they don’t want the hassle of having to take care of a big piece of property.

One of the best ways to determine how to make your site informative is to query your past clients. Send them a survey and ask them to list what their top ten considerations were when buying or selling their homes. This way you will start off with great ideas on how to build your user focused site.

Don’t forget your friends and family. Even if they don’t yet own a home, it’s another way to get an objective point of view and they may give you fresh insight into what your site needs to make it more user focused.

You can also ask them to view your website and determine if it would hold their attention and give them the information they felt they needed if they were considering buying or selling a home.

A virtual assistant is someone who helps you with office and life tasks – from a remote site.  We’ve all been using virtual assistants for years, but with the recent upgrades in technology we have now perfected it.

Have you ever wished that you could split into two people so you could get more done?  Virtual assistants are great for tasks that you don’t want to do, don’t know how to do of don’t have time to do.

Look around your office and ask yourself, “Is there anything I wish I didn’t have to do?”  Imagine being able to hand that job off and knowing that it was going to be done and you weren’t going to have to talk someone through it.  What could you do with the time you could free up just by having someone else complete this task?

That’s what having virtual assistants is all about. They free you up to do the tasks you want to devote your time and energies to, while still getting necessary work completed on schedule.

TAKE THAT OLD CELL PHONE, DIGITAL CAMERA, PDA AND LAPTOP OUT OF RETIREMENT AND PUT IT TO WORK!

Please donate your used cell phones, digital cameras, PDA’s and laptops to help raise much needed funds for SCValleyMommies.com.

And don’t forget to spread the word to all your friends and family members!!

Something I heard yesterday made me mad.  So mad that briefly I turned into Mathilda the Mad Mommy Monster, she is the Mom equivalent of the incredible Hulk.  When ever some thing involving children and children’s rights is wrong of unfair I seem to get a big estrogen jolt and at least in my mind’s eye I get superhuman powers, bloat up, turn green and feel like I could step on small buildings and crush them.  At least that’s what it feels like.Having said that, and we can all sense a Mad Mommy Monster rant coming on…..I want to make one thing perfectly clear.  I am not anti –vaccination, I am pro parent choice.  I am not a scientist, I am a Mom, the jury is still out for me on vaccines.  But I whole heartedly believe in parent’s rights to choose what goes in their children’s bodies, and I am a super supporter of Mother’s instincts, which I believe transcend science.Okay, end of disclaimer, on to the rant!

A good friend sent me an email yesterday that she has to take her 4 year old in for vaccines, because she was told that he can’t go to Kindergarten without them.  She said she didn’t want to do it, but he has to go to Kindergarten.  Apparently the principal himself told her that her child could not be admitted without the proper vaccinations.

This is a lie. It is a lie that is being told to parents all over the country.  You do not have to have your child vaccinated to send them to school.  Parents all over the country have stood up to the lie, and the schools when challenged have let the children attend school without vaccinations.  I talk to women all over the country who have been faced with school officials who have told them there is no way around it – the child has to be vaccinated, and when the parent would not consent there was always some form in a hidden drawer that the parent or the child’s pediatrician could sign to waive having the vaccines.  I personally have had to do this.

I understand what the schools are trying to do.  They are trying to keep “herd percentages” on vaccines.  In order for a vaccine to be effective there has to be a certain percentage in a herd who actually get the vaccine, once that percentage is reached there is an assumption that there cannot be an outbreak.

I think what makes me mad is the school’s coercive methods attempt to take advantage of our trusting natures.  It doesn’t occur to us that a school official would lie to us about something as important as our parental rights.  No one can force you to vaccinate your child.  Consider religions who do not believe in using certain medical technology.  The courts have never been successful in forcing parents to treat their children unless there were dire medical consequences and even then the courts have not been successful in all cases.

If my friend was scientologist do we really think that the principal would turn her child away and refuse to allow him to attend kindergarten without the vaccines?  No, because that would be unconstitutional, and the principal knows that.  A little piece of paper would be taken out of the dark hidden drawer, the parent would sign their refusal to vaccinate and everyone would go on their merry way.

But principals and school officials all over the country are telling parents lies in the hopes that they will just be intimidated into being in the “herd”.  I’m not a fan of lies, especially where my child is concerned, and I really don’t appreciate it coming from a professional who claims to have my child’s best interests at heart.  It makes Mathilda the Mad Mommy monster really angry!

My point is, where your child is concerned follow your instincts.  Don’t believe everything that nice people in suits tell you, and don’t take anyone’s word for what is right for your child.  Take the time to educate yourself and make the decision that is right for your family and your child.

If you want more information about vaccines, alternative vaccination schedules and how to minimize any possible negative effects of vaccinations, I suggest visiting Generation Rescue.

    By Nicole Perkins

At any given time I have up to six projects going at once, all with different deadlines, and some without any concrete parameters. Now I will admit, I could be better at time management, but really moms, couldn’t we all? We just don’t have enough time in the day!

Nonetheless, I am a stickler for deadlines and rarely miss them. I work well under pressure, wrote many of my best papers in college with Mountain Dew and noisy roommates, watching the sunrise as we fought over who got the shower first. And I loved working in a newsroom (before the kids) - strict deadlines and a chain of command for days to remind you of it.

These days though, it’s Diet Mountain Dew, an occasional 3 a.m.’er, and none but the voice in my head pushing me along. Which is all well and good – as long as I’m healthy.

This past week, while my husband was on week two of a business trip, I got sick – really sick. It took everything I had to keep this house functioning until I could collapse into bed at night. Forget about working - I was up late, but for all the wrong reasons.

I didn’t handle it well, I’ll admit it. My energy was already drained from being a temporary single mother – and now this virus. And I didn’t have just one boss to “call in sick” to, but three (not to mention the people counting on them), which wreaked even more havoc on my already depleted psyche. I felt like I was letting not only my kids down with cheap frozen dinners, but the people who were counting on my work.

Now that the fog has lifted and I try to pick up where I left off, I realize as a virtual assistant, there are no day-to-day exchanges with colleagues, who whether they like you or not, know what is going on with you as a person. We are not a face and most times, not even a voice. No one can see your gaunt skin and sunken eyes when you’re sick – there are no sick days.

It’s a new “workplace environment” where we are only our work, yet I was so genuinely grateful and relieved to discover that although we may not be face to face, there is still kindness, compassion and understanding. Being a virtual assistant may seem lonely at our computers with email as our only communication, but we’re all in the same boat - trying to take care of our families while making ends meet and I’m so glad to be a part of it.

What is a new way to convert online visitors into customers?

There is a revolutionary, high-tech (and yet low-tech people can benefit) device that you can utilitze within your website so that people can put communication with you right now and even talk with you directly without having to call you on a regular phone.

Most people nowadays are getting more and more demanding when it comes to having access to ask questions and get them answered quickly. To help stand out from competition you have to do something different, thus making a free service available to your website visitors so that they can choose how and when they want to communicate with you.

I use the Live Chat software that is offered through Volusion, but it is stictly offers online chat capabilities (much like Instant Messaging through MSN), it also has a way to make a graphic button so that people can simply click on the button and then email their question to me. This way they don’t have to hunt around for a link or a way to contact me.

FYI, a lot of Real Estate Agents and Brokers are starting to use this feature to get active leads from people that are surfing their website.
